Description

A classic pie that combines sweet and tart apples with warm spices, perfect for family gatherings and comforting moments.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 68 cups mixed apples (such as Granny Smith and Honeycrisp)
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar (or brown sugar)
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup cold unsalted butter, cubed
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice

Instructions

  1. Peel, core, and slice the apples. Toss them with sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice in a bowl. Let sit for 15-20 minutes.
  2. Make the pie crust by blending flour and salt, cutting in cold butter, and adding ice water until dough forms. Chill for at least an hour.
  3. Roll out one disc of dough into a 12-inch circle and place it in a pie dish.
  4. Pour the apple filling into the crust and dot with butter.
  5. Roll out the second disc of dough and place it over the filling, cutting slits for steam or creating a lattice pattern. Crimp the edges.
  6. Brush the crust with egg wash and bake at 425°F (220°C) for 15 minutes, then lower to 350°F (175°C) and bake for 30-40 minutes.
  7. Allow cooling before slicing.

Notes

For a twist, try adding a splash of vanilla or other spices like ginger or allspice.
