Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour (or bread flour)
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water (about 110°F)
  • 2/3 cup baking soda
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 tablespoons sesame seeds
  • 2 tablespoons poppy seeds
  • 1 teaspoon garlic flakes
  • 1 teaspoon onion flakes
  • Coarse sea salt for sprinkling

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until bubbly.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour and salt. Gradually add to the yeast mixture until a dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with cloth, and let rise for 1 hour until doubled in size.
  5. Preheat oven to 450°F (232°C). Punch down the dough, divide into 8-10 pieces, and roll each into a 24-inch rope. Shape into pretzels.
  6. In a large pot, bring 10 cups of water and baking soda to a boil. Boil each pretzel for 30 seconds per side.
  7. Transfer to a parchment-lined baking sheet, brush with melted butter, and sprinkle with everything bagel topping.
  8. Bake for 12-15 minutes until golden brown and puffed up.
  9. Allow to cool for a few minutes before serving warm.

Notes

For a dairy-free option, substitute butter with olive oil. You can also try different toppings like Parmesan cheese.
