Description
A nostalgic dessert made of creamy custard, ripe bananas, and Nilla Wafers, topped with whipped cream, perfect for family gatherings.
Ingredients
Scale
- 4 ripe bananas, sliced
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 4 cups whole milk
- 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract
- 4 egg yolks
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 box Nilla Wafers
- 2 cups whipped cream
Instructions
- In a medium saucepan, combine granulated sugar, brown sugar, flour, and a pinch of salt. Gradually whisk in milk and cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until thickened.
- In a separate bowl, beat together egg yolks. Temper the egg yolks with a small amount of the hot mixture, then pour back into the saucepan, stirring well.
- Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract and butter until melted.
- In a serving dish, layer sliced bananas, custard, and Nilla Wafers. Repeat the layering until all ingredients are used, finishing with whipped cream on top.
- Chill in the refrigerator for at least 240 minutes to allow flavors to meld.
- Before serving, optionally garnish with crushed Nilla Wafers or fresh banana slices.
Notes
For a dairy-free version, use almond or coconut milk. If substituting Nilla Wafers, graham crackers work well.
