Description

A nostalgic dessert made of creamy custard, ripe bananas, and Nilla Wafers, topped with whipped cream, perfect for family gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 ripe bananas, sliced
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 4 cups whole milk
  • 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract
  • 4 egg yolks
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 box Nilla Wafers
  • 2 cups whipped cream

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan, combine granulated sugar, brown sugar, flour, and a pinch of salt. Gradually whisk in milk and cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until thickened.
  2. In a separate bowl, beat together egg yolks. Temper the egg yolks with a small amount of the hot mixture, then pour back into the saucepan, stirring well.
  3. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract and butter until melted.
  4. In a serving dish, layer sliced bananas, custard, and Nilla Wafers. Repeat the layering until all ingredients are used, finishing with whipped cream on top.
  5. Chill in the refrigerator for at least 240 minutes to allow flavors to meld.
  6. Before serving, optionally garnish with crushed Nilla Wafers or fresh banana slices.

Notes

For a dairy-free version, use almond or coconut milk. If substituting Nilla Wafers, graham crackers work well.
