Description

A whimsical twist on classic cinnamon rolls featuring a vibrant red dough and creamy frosting, perfect for sharing love and joy.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast
  • 1 cup whole milk (or almond/oat milk)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg (or flax egg for vegan)
  • 2 tablespoons red food coloring
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup cream cheese
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for frosting)

Instructions

  1. Warm the milk slightly and mix in sugar and yeast. Let it sit until bubbly (5-10 minutes).
  2. In a bowl, whisk flour, cocoa powder, and salt. In another bowl, combine the egg, melted butter, and red food coloring.
  3. Combine the yeast mixture with the flour mixture, then add the egg mixture and stir to form a sticky dough.
  4. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8 minutes until smooth and elastic. Let it rise in a greased bowl covered with a towel for about 1 hour.
  5. Mix cinnamon, sugar, and softened butter for the filling.
  6. Roll the dough into a rectangle and spread the cinnamon filling over it, leaving a border.
  7. Roll tightly from the long side, pinch seams, and cut into 12 equal rolls.
  8. Place in a greased dish, cover, and let rise for another 30 minutes.
  9. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and bake for 20-25 minutes until lightly golden.
  10. Mix cream cheese, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract for frosting while rolls bake.
  11. Let the rolls cool slightly, then frost and serve warm.

Notes

These cinnamon rolls are best served warm and can be stored in an airtight container for up to 3 days or frozen for up to 3 months.
