Description
Creamy, cheesy gratin potatoes that are perfect for family gatherings and special occasions. A comforting side dish that everyone will love.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 pounds Yukon Gold or Russet potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
- 2 cups heavy cream (or half-and-half for a lighter version)
- 2 cups Gruyère or sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 4 tablespoons butter
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- Fresh thyme or rosemary, for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
- Peel and thinly slice your potatoes.
- Melt butter in a large skillet over medium heat, then add minced garlic and sauté until fragrant, about 1-2 minutes.
- Pour in the heavy cream, stirring to combine. Season lightly with salt and pepper.
- Layer your sliced potatoes in a greased baking dish, sprinkling some cheese between layers and pouring the creamy garlic mixture over the top.
- Finish with a generous layer of cheese and optional herbs.
- Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes until bubbly and golden brown.
- Let the gratin sit for about 10 minutes before serving.
Notes
Letting the gratin rest after baking helps to tighten the layers and enhances flavor. Avoid using watery potatoes for the best texture.
